Welcome to the Greater Cambridge Athletics Network
Established in October 2009, the Greater Cambridge Athletic Network (GCAN) is one of many athletics networks setup by England Athletics with the support of McCains. GCAN is a partnership of athletic and road running clubs working alongside other sporting bodies in and around the Greater Cambridge area to improve the sport at a local level.

GCAN High Performance Service - Final Report
Ben Snaith and John Oakes have come to the end of their training with Core Cambridge
and we have seen some fantastic results already. Ben won gold in the 100m and 400m
at the schools games held on 9th May at the Olympic stadium an amazing achievement.
John has also achieved some fantastic results completing his target 10k in 33min
30 sec on 15th April. Nicole, the coach that has been working with Ben and John
was asked to write about the experience from her point of view, so read the

GCAN Year 3 Funding Approved
At the end of February we received the news that England Athletics have given funding
for our year three plan. This is fantastic news as we have an ambitious plan for
2012 enabling us to build on the success that has already been achieved.
The main areas of the work for this year are on coach and club development, especially
to support juniors, and increasing overall participation. We will also be working
towards making the network sustainable beyond the initial three year funded period.

Sunday 13th May - FILM: Town of Runners
Venue: Saffron Screen, Saffron Walden County High School, Saffron Walden,
Essex, CB11 4UH - 8:00pm
Bekoji, a small town in rural Ethiopia, has produced some of the world’s best long-distance
runners. This fascinating documentary follows two young girls over four years as
they try to become professional athletes.
Director Jerry Rothwell and producer Al Morrow return to Saffron Screen to introduce
their latest film and host a Q&A following the film. Information and tickets available

Sunday 17th June - Chilford 10K
Venue: Chilford Hall Vineyard, Balsham Road, Linton, Cambridge CB21 4LE.
- 11:00am
This event aims to raise fund for the Linton Out of School Club. The race also includes
a 5K for those wanting a shorter distance. The entry form is
available here.
Sunday 1st July - Powters Newmarket 10K
Venue: Ellesmere Centre, Stetchworth Village, Near Newmarket CB8 9TS, 10:00am.
Includes a junior fun run starting at 9:30am. Details and entry from the
Newmarket Joggers website.
Wednesday 4th July - Quadkids Event
Venue: Cambridge University Athletics Track, Wilberforce Road, 4:00pm to
6:00pm.
Free competition to all network club junior sections. To enter a team please email

Sunday 30th September - Saffron Walden 10K
Venue: Newport Free Grammar School, Bury Water Lane, Newport, Essex, CB11
3TR - 10:30am
The race is "on-tour" again this year, taking place in countryside around the village
of Newport. The team prize is now open to running clubs and every finisher gets
a technical T-shirt. Includes a family fun-run starting at 11:45. Download an
